the older i get the more it’s clear that being smart doesn’t get you very far if you’re not disciplined. there are tons of people who are brilliant but not disciplined. they have amazing ideas but cannot finish a project. they are creative and innovative but cannot execute a plan. i see how important it is to set deadlines and boundaries for myself an to be disciplined.

We all gotta deal with the fact that we have to interact with ourselves, and that we fundamentally are not actually one mind—but rather as many different minds for each new moment that we’re living and making decisions, decisions that on the one hand have been irreparably limited by our prior decisions, and which on the other bear the weight of being responsible for affecting what we may be able to decide to do in the future. At any given time we are dealing with all the decisions of our selves, and these decisions are never carried out by quite exactly the same mind. Thus, in fact, in our own basic existence as a person we already have the features of a social existence, with the need to communicate between different minds (after all, what exactly would your personality be without linguistically-enabled cognition?), and a corresponding ethical responsibility for the impact of our actions.
